Assignments and Announcements for 4-27-20 to 5-4-20

Hi all, hope you are well and staying safe.  Our directions for the week are below as well as some other information you should read.

Directions for week of 4/27-5/4: More AP Practice problems

We have now finished everything on the exam.  We will be practicing AP problems pretty exclusively until the AP test now.  Then we will work on the lessons that are not on the AP exam including Area between curves, rotational volume, and cross-sectional volume.

Step 1Download and print out the three AP problems that are due on Monday 5-4-20 at 4:00 from the blog, the first two are from Byran Passwater and this is his mock of the AP exam that mimicks the 12th.  They are wonderful and he probably has a real good feel for what the test is going to be like since he is one of the presenters on the you-tube videos on the AP review site:

Step 2:
Do these three problems like you will on the AP test with notes, formula packet, and calculator.  Photo them and send them back to Mr. Halstead via e-mail.  We suggest you download an app like genius scan and practice scanning them and then downloading them to the e-mail (Halstead).   Remember you will only have 5 minutes to download each problem and we do not know how easy it will be to type the entries in.  We should find more information out about that on the 28th, and hopefully have a way for you to practice with the interface.

There is no discussion question to answer on schoology this week.

·        Answers for last week’s FRQs will be posted tomorrow on the blog and you should check them, remember last week’s problems are due Monday 4-20-20 at 4:00.

·         Remember for those taking the AP test.  The college board has now started their review videos at the link below:

They are outstanding and should give you a nice review of the material and we suggest you watch as many as possible

·       The prediction packet has many wonderful free response examples that you should have been working through.  If not start with one problem per prediction ignoring the area between curves and rotational volume prediction.  When you get done go back and start with a second cycle through.  You have enough examples to make at least three complete cycles.  If the scoring rubric does not answer your question do not hesitate to e-mail one of us and we will answer ASAP.

·        We are going to do teams meetings every Wednesday and Friday.  This is the parent notification of he fact we will be running these meetings.  Ms Straub is running Wednesdays at 12:30 and I will run Fridays at 2:00 but we will be moderating each others, so in essence it does not matter whose you want to attend.  You must send us an e-mail though by 6:00 the day before so you get an invite though.  Without that e-mail saying you want to attend you will not be able to. Once you e-mail us you will get an invite in your school e-mail account shortly afterwards.  These meeting will essentially be to answer questions on the ap problems that are due on the 27th.

·        Grades are now active and building in the fourth quarter, remember the fourth quarter is all process grades and some of you are missing some significant work that will be difficult to get turned in all at once to get a pass for the class in the fourth quarter.  Suffice it to say, if you keep doing your work you will be ok.

Miss you all very much.  Remember the work for achieving as high as you can on the AP test now lies primarily in your hands.  We will help you as much as we can under these conditions and we are proud of the work you are continuing to do.  Work hard and if we can help let us know.
Mr. Halstead.

Directions for week of 4/15-4/21: AP Practice problems

We have now finished everything on the exam.  We will be practicing AP problems pretty exclusively until the AP test now.  Then we will work on the lessons that are not on the AP exam including Area between curves, rotational volume, and cross-sectional volume.

Step 1: Download and print out the three AP problems that are due on Monday 4-20-20 at 4:00:   3 AP problem assignment for 4-15-4-22

Step 2:  Do these three problems like you will on the AP test with notes, formula packet, and calculator.  Photo them and send them back to Mr. Halstead via e-mail and for Ms. Straub upload them to schoology.

There is no discussion question to answer on schoology this week.

Answers for the exponential growth hwk will be posted tomorrow on Thurs and the inverse trig integrals hwk on Friday on the blog and you should check them.

Week 2 of online learning 4-6 through 4-9

Ok here we go on week 2 of the journey, miss seeing you guys and am proud of what you have been accomplishing online so far.

Step 1:  Watch the video on exponential growth and decay.  She does an excellent job proving the exponential growth and decay function.  You do not have to do this for every problem and can start with the equation
y = Ne^(kt) and go from there but you should understand where this formula comes from by watching her video.  She does a couple of examples as well.  Ignore the part of the video on Newtons law of cooling.

Additional resources:

Halstead and Straub notes from last year

http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/problems/calci/explogeqns.aspx  (lamar univ notes on exponential growth no video)

Step 2:  Do assigned problems on exponential growth and decay by opening assignment using link below.  Photograph your assignment and send it via e-mail back to Mr. Halstead/Ms. Straub by Thursday 4-9 at 8:00  P.M.

Exponential Growth and Decay Assignment

Step 3:  Go to schoology and answer the discussion question under the exponential growth folder.  Just type your response.

Step 4:  Watch the video on solving integrals that result in inverse trigonometric functions.  Just basically an amped up u-substitution integral.  We call them work-box integrals and I think you will see why if you look at our notes below in the additional resources..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE-0gXXx_j0  (Don't panic that it says the organic chemistry tutor, he does a nice job explaining this calculus topic)

Additional resources:

halstead and straub notes last year

https://math.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Calculus/Book%3A_Calculus_(OpenStax)/05%3A_Integration/5.7%3A_Integrals_Resulting_in_Inverse_Trigonometric_Functions  (non video notes of these integral types, only look at if the above two resources video and our notes do not get it across)

Step 5:  Answer the discussion question on integrals resulting in inverse trig integrals and complete the assignment on these integrals and e-mail it back to Mr Halstead/Ms Straub by the 14th Tuesday at 4:00.

Assignment on Integrals that result in an inverse trigonometric function

Our next weeks assignment will come out on Wednesday the 15th since Monday of that week is a holiday day off.

Remember in addition to this make sure you read the grading e-mail we sent earlier and have turned in or made up the things required of you.

You should on your own be practicing AP questions from the prediction packet and logging some time on the AP reviews that the college board is running on you-tube.  It won't surprise us at all if those things they are reviewing appear on the Exam this year.

As always if questions arise as you are doing these topics please e-mail us and we will reply at some point during school hours as quickly as we can.

Thanks,
Mr. Halstead/Ms. Straub
