Extra credit assignment and summer assignment guidelines

Hi all, hope you are well and staying safe.  We really gave you the directions for this week last week, remember you have the disc and washer homework’s due on Friday for 40 points of hwk (2 twenty point grades) and the discussion question on schoology (5 point grade).  We will post answers to that hwk on the following week.   We will offer a team’s meeting on Friday the 5th at 1:00 P.M to go over any questions on the disc and washer homework or help on notes for disc and washer.  To be included in that review you must e-mail us by 4:00 P.M. on Thursday.  Without an e-mail saying you want to attend these meetings you will not be able to. Once you e-mail one of us, you will get an invite in your school e-mail.  This is parent notification of that meeting.

As for the next week we have a bonus assignment with specific directions.  The assignment is on cross sectional volumes that are grown between two curves and outlined below.  It is extra credit because the final week is for make up work.  We would like it back by 6-10 or next Wednesday which gives you a week to work on it.  If you are not going on to calc BC and you are happy with your quarter grade then there is no need to do the assignment below.  If you are going on to BC we need to be familiar with this topic when we get there in January next year so it does not need to be taught from scratch and I highly suggest you do the assignment and turn in by its due date.

As for summer work.  BC students you do not have any summer assignment so again please do this extra credit assignment even if you do not need it so we are prepared for next year.  The only thing I ask of my BC students over the summer is that you review your units on Limits the week or two before school as we will be going through that pretty quickly at the beginning of the year.  For students who are taking AP Statistics or retaking AP Calculus AB, you do have a summer assignment that is outlined below and a schoology group to join to get that assignment so please join it this week.

Summer Work for AP Statistics and AP Calculus AB:  If we were in school right now we would be meeting with students going into AP Stats and AP Calc AB to discuss summer assignments. Since we are not, we have created a schoology group for both of those classes. If you join the group and go into the resources you will see the summer assignment for your respective course. Please be sure to read the front page carefully and let me know if you have any questions.

If you are taking AP Stats next year please use the following code to join the AP Stats group on schoology: 4JDK-5S8K-RNXQK

If you are re-taking AP Calculus AB next year please use the following code to join the AP Stats group on schoology: MH2T-3NPS-27M8D

If you are having any problems printing out the summer assignment let one of us know!!!

Bonus Assignment on Cross sectional Volume (definitely should do if taking BC next year):

Step 1Watch the video on cross sectional volume: http://calculus.flippedmath.com/114-perpendicular-cross-sections.html

There is a notes packet that goes with the video if you want to take notes to have as you complete the assignment.

Step 2:  Do the worksheet that has a few practice problems on this topic that can be found at the following link:

As for how to do the work please draw a sketch of the curves, set up the integral, and then you can calculate the integral using your calculator.  You be thinking as you set up the integral how you would do it without the calculator but doing all of the integrals by hand will make this take longer than necessary.

Additional Important Information

·         Remember for those taking the AP make-up test through the exception process, the college board is doing their review videos at the link below:

They are outstanding and should give you a nice review of the material and I suggest you watch as many as possible, and as I previously mentioned this week is testing tips and mock problems so watch and do as much as you can.

·         The prediction packet has many wonderful free response examples that you should have been working through.  If not, start with one problem per prediction ignoring the area between curves and rotational volume prediction.  When you get done go back and start with a second cycle through.  You have enough examples to make at least three complete cycles.  If the scoring rubric does not answer your question do not hesitate to e-mail one of us and we will answer ASAP.

·         Grades are now active and building in the fourth quarter, remember the fourth quarter is all process grades and some of you are missing some significant work that has to get turned in to get a pass for the class in the fourth quarter.  Some of you are missing significant discussions on schoology, so go fill those out this week.
So essentially this closes out this crazy year.  We might send you a reminder e-mail contact but no more assignment e-mails.   REMEMBER TO DOWNLOAD YOUR SUMMER ASSIGNMENT IF RETAKING AB OR TAKING AP STATISTICS THROUGH THE SCHOOLOGY LINKS ABOVE, AS WE WILL BE CHECKING THEM THE FIRST OR SECOND DAY OF SCHOOL.  We cannot tell you how proud we are of you all and how you persevered through this process.  Hopefully for those of you that took the test we will get the results you wanted, but the advantage of BC next year is that you will get a chance to replace that score if it does not go the way you wanted assuming that the test is your traditional BC test.  Enjoy your summer, and hopefully we will see everyone in the fall.

Take care and be safe,
Mr. Halstead

Assignment for 5-27 to 6-5 on Rotational 3-dimensional volumes using the disc and washer method

Hi all, hope you are well and staying safe.  Our directions for the week are below as well as some other information you should read. We will offer a team’s meeting on Friday the 29th at 1:00 P.M to go over any questions on the Area Between the Curve homework or help on notes for disc and washer.  To be included in that review you must e-mail us by 4:00 P.M. on Thursday.  Without an e-mail saying you want to attend these meetings you will not be able to. Once you e-mail one of us, you will get an invite in your school e-mail.  This is parent notification of that meeting.

Directions for Juniors for week of 5/27 to 6/5: Disc and Washer Method

There is a notes packet that goes with the video if you want to take notes to have as you complete the assignment. Upload the notes packet to schoology for Ms. Straub by 6/5 at 11:59PM.  The notes are your option for Mr. Halstead and don’t need to be turned in.

Step 2:  Watch the video on Washer Method: http://calculus.flippedmath.com/113-solids-of-revolution-washers.html

There is a notes packet that goes with the video if you want to take notes to have as you complete the assignment. Upload the notes packet to schoology for Ms. Straub by 6/5 at 11:59PM.  The notes are your option for Mr. Halstead and don’t need to be turned in.

Step 3:  Complete the discussion question on schoology by 6/5 at 11:59PM: What is the difference between the disc method and washer method and how do you know when to use each one?

Step 4:  Complete pages 465-466 Disc Method {#1,4,8,10,11a, 11c, 16,19, 23, 25, 28, 34, 38} and Washer Method {#5, 6, 11b, 11d, 14a, 14b, 18, 20, 21,29, 32} and upload to schoology for Ms. Straub by 6/5 at 11:59 PM.  For Mr. Halstead continue to do what we have been doing and e-mail pictures of the work to him on the same time frame.  As for how to do the work please draw a sketch of the curves, set up the integral, and then you can calculate the integral using your calculator.  You be thinking as you set up the integral how you would do it without the calculator but doing all of the integrals by hand will make this take longer than necessary.  These are important topics for Calculus BC and will be addressed heavier next year under the circumstances, but you need to do as good of a job as you can learning this because we will not have a huge amount of extra time to spend on these topics.  This is 40 points of work and will go in gradebook as two 20 point assignments.

Assignments and announcements for Seniors 5-11 to 5-15

Hi all, hope you are well and staying safe.  Our directions for the week are below as well as some other information you should read. We will run a final team’s meeting on Tuesday the 12th to go over this mock exam and answer any last-minute questions at 10:00 A.M.  To be included in that review you must e-mail us by 4:00 P.M. on Monday.  Without an e-mail saying you want to attend these meetings you will not be able to.   Once you e-mail one of us, you will get an invite in your school e-mail.

This is an unusual year for all of us with how the AP Exams are working and to log in 30 minutes early.  You should have received your exam tickets this weekend. As you take the test just remember to read the questions carefully and if you are stuck stop for a second and think what we have done that is similar to what they are asking. You have all the Calculus skills you need to be successful, please be careful with your Algebra. Use your calculator, your formula sheet, keep the prediction packet handy, write down any volume formulas we have discussed, and most importantly if you do not know how to do a question skip it and move onto the next one. These questions were written to take the entire time allowed. Make sure you stop working when the time ends and begin uploading your work immediately. You only have 5 minutes to upload your work.   Make sure you have printed out your checklist, practiced with the demo, and know how you are submitting. Remember PDF is not acceptable but follow the directions below if you choose to do so.

Directions for Seniors for week of 5/11 to 5/15: More AP Practice problems and final preparations for the exam

We know most of you are taking more than one AP Exam over the next two weeks. So your last assignment for Calculus is to turn in any missing work.

For those of you who plan on taking Calculus in College we will still be posting videos and assignments on the topics that were not on the AP Test this year: Area Between the Curves, Cross Section, and Volume using Disc or Washer Method. If you want a preview of this topics you can still login to schoology or the blog and watch the videos and complete the assignments. This is 100% optional and is not a requirement.

Additional Important Information

·         Answers for last week’s FRQs are posted on the blog and on schoology and you should check them.

·         Remember for those taking the AP test.  The college board is doing their review videos at the link below:

·         If you did not read the testing information e-mail and attachment on Friday make sure you go to your school e-mail and do so.  Remember the testing information, and checklist are on schoology as well as a typing syntax document if you decide you do not want to photo your work on AP day and want to type everything in.  PLEASE PRACTICE with the demo this week to make sure you understand how to operate the system on the 12th.

Lastly, this is not how I wanted the year to end.  I so look forward to looking you all in the eyes and telling you how very proud of you I am.  I ask a lot because I expect a lot out of you, and know the quality of mathematical students I am sending on to universities is high.  In addition to your academic prowess, you have learned how to manage your time and deal with things when they have not been easy.  You are all so capable of whatever you want and I know you are going to go set the world on fire.  I will miss giving those hugs goodbye that I would have on Friday, but when this is all over, I am not hard to find.  Remember, once you are my student, you are always my student and I will help however I can.  I am so proud of you all and it has been an incredible honor to be your teacher during your senior year of your high school career.  OK; gotta go now before the keyboard shorts out.  I am thinking of you all this week and standing beside you the whole way.

Miss you all very much and I know you can do this.  Remember the work for achieving as high as you can on the AP test now lies primarily in your hands.  We will help you as much as we can under these conditions and we are proud of the work you are continuing to do.  Work hard and if I can help let me know.

Directions for Juniors for week of 5/11 to 5/22: Final preparations for the AP exam and Area between curves

We know most of you are taking more than one AP Exam over the next two weeks. So this week we are stretching out the work for this week to be completed over two weeks instead of one. If you are not taking AP exams and are behind on your work this would be a good time to catch up on your missing assignments.

Step 1Watch the video on Area Between the Curves. There is a notes packet that goes with the video if you want to take notes to have as you complete the assignment.

Step 2:  Complete from your textbook:  pg. 454-457 #2,3,6,25,28,29,30,32,33,34,36,38,41,44,48,52,54,56 and upload to schoology by 5/22 at 11:59 PM

Step 3:  Complete the discussion question on schoology by 5/22 at 11:59PM:

They are outstanding and should give you a nice review of the material and I suggest you watch as many as possible, and as I previously mentioned this week is testing tips and mock problems so watch and do as much as you can.  Also today we heard about the AP cancelling students tests involved in a cheating ring.  Do the best you can and do not put yourself at risk trying to get an edge.  Remember there are very serious consequences for cheating including reporting to your college and being banned from all college-board testing.

·         The prediction packet has many wonderful free response examples that you should have been working through.  If not start with one problem per prediction ignoring the area between curves and rotational volume prediction.  When you get done go back and start with a second cycle through.  You have enough examples to make at least three complete cycles.  If the scoring rubric does not answer your question do not hesitate to e-mail one of us and we will answer ASAP.

Final Mock Exam assignment and AP PUSH, as well as important announcements

Hi all, hope you are well and staying safe.  Our directions for the week are below as well as some other information you should read.

Directions for week of 5/4 to 5/8: More AP Practice problems and final preparations for the exam

We know the exam is on the 12th and this week on the you-tube site they will be practicing more AP problems and going over some test prep geared towards the electronic exam.  WE HIGHLY SUGGEST you sit down with paper and work through the problems they do on you-tube as we think they will be geared towards that magic day.  We are cutting our work for the week down to two problems as a result.  We debated doing three as we have the last couple of weeks but reminded myself you will get out of this week what you put into it in readying yourself for the exam.  You should know your weaknesses and have plenty to practice between the prediction packet and the AP live videos so work hard to get yourself ready.  We are giving another mock test as your assignment that is due next Monday and that we will go over in one final teams meeting on the 11th.

Step 1Download and print out the Mock AP exam.

This mock exam is due by Friday 5-8-20 at 5:00 P.M.

Step 2:
Do these two problems like you will on the AP test with notes, formula packet, and calculator.  Photo them and send them back to Mr. Halstead via e-mail or Ms Straub on schoology.  You can send them to me in PDF, but remember the AP exam is not going to accept PDF so make sure you can send in .png, .jpg, .jpeg. format 1 picture per page p to 5 pages per problem.  Remember you will have to download them to your device and attach them to the problem in 5 minutes so practice, practice, practice.

Step 3:  There are three quick discussion questions to answer this week on schoology.

Step 4:  Extra credit opportunities

Extra credit for College board video practice test from Monday and scored on Tuesday uploaded by 5/5 at 11:59pm.

Extra credit for college board video practice test from Wednesday and scored on Thursday uploaded by 5/8 at 11:59pm.

Additional Important Information

·       Answers for last week’s FRQs will be posted tomorrow on the blog and you should check them, remember last week’s problems are due Monday 5-4-20 at 4:00.

·       Remember for those taking the AP test.  The college board is doing their review videos at the link below:

·       Our Wednesday 12:30 and Friday 2:00 teams meeting this week will cover the problems that are due on the 4th today.  This is the parent notification of the fact we will be running these meetings.  You must send us an e-mail though by noon on Tuesday to be included in that Wednesday review and noon on Friday to be included in the Friday review.  We will run a final teams meeting on Tuesday the 12th to go over this mock exam and answer any last minute questions at 10:00 A.M.  To be included in that review you must e-mail us by 4:00 P.M. on Sunday the 10th  Without an e-mail saying you want to attend these meetings you will not be able to.   Once you e-mail one of us, you will get an invite in your school e-mail.

·       Grades are now active and building in the fourth quarter, remember the fourth quarter is all process grades and some of you are missing some significant work that has to get turned in to get a pass for the class in the fourth quarter.  Some of you are missing significant discussions on schoology, so go fill those out this week.
